from today’s aiga chicago newsletter:
“To play it safe is not to play.”
:: Robert Altman, film director
this one may bump my tibor quote in my sig line. at the very least it will get a place on honor in my notebook(s). what a challenging question to ask yourself. i think it’s especially difficult as we age and, maybe, mature in our career to remain fresh and playful in out approaches. if you’re honest with your self and you think back on most of your best and must fulfilling ideas 9 times out of 10 they probably started with play. they may have started with crazy. or…with “what the hell”.
fresh ideas are what keep me going in this business. it’s the excitement, the positively electric jolt, i get when i find a solution or when i see a colleague find one. the light-bulb above the head is my own personal jesus of design.
go play. and if you’re not playing, you need to ask yourself why…

say what? yes, i love pillows. yes, i love hable construction (though the pillow above is not from hable). yes, they both live peaceably together at Weego Home which qualifies it, at least in my mind, as a perfect store.

“I am enthusiastic over humanity’s extraordinary and sometimes very timely ingenuities. If you are in a shipwreck and all the boats are gone, a piano top buoyant enough to keep you afloat may come along and make a fortuitous life preserver. This is not to say, though, that the best way to design a life preserver is in the form of a piano top. I think we are clinging to a great many piano tops in accepting yesterday’s fortuitous contrivings as constituting the only means for solving a given problem.” :: R. BUCKMINSTER FULLER
some days i feel as if i’m drowning is a swimming pool filled with piano tops. too much grasping at what used to work. too many minds unable to flex with new logic or, new mystery. god save us from our own piano tops.

the little girl header has been replaced by a new, and moodier, header. not that i meant for it to be moody, it just is. the image in the background is a tight shot of a piece of the light fixtures that are being installed in the new doudna fine arts center. i shot this while on a tour two weeks ago. these lights are the first finished bit of the building i’ve seen. it’s an amazing building designed by antoine predock. make sure you click that link to see just how fortunate we are to have one of antoine’s buildings on the campus of eastern illinois university. who’d a thunk it?

probably one of the best tees for designers that i’ve seen recently comes for the font house psy/ops. they call the collection (yes, regardless of the opening sentence here there are more than one) the dummy series. my favorite is the one to the far right.
i present them to you now: THE DUMMY SERIES
